‘But gas is cheaper than electric’ is the most common counterpoint to electric heating we’ve seen. But there’s so much more to your heating than the cost…

Space Saving

More and more people are embracing a compact lifestyle, with modern homes designed to use as little space as possible. Electric boilers fit perfectly into this trend.

Look at it this way. Gas boilers need a pilot light, a flue to expel waste, and a lot of complicated machinery. This constrains their designs and makes them a lot more unwieldy.

Electric boilers are more like large kettles. While they still need the same pipes and radiators to get heat around your property, they don’t need to be installed on external walls, and they can be a lot smaller.

This gives you a lot more freedom when it comes to your home layout, especially if you’re constructing a new build from the ground up with electric heating in mind.

Lowered Maintenance

Those compact designs also conceal another benefit, which is that electric boilers are a lot less fussy compared to gas boilers, with fewer moving parts and fewer bits that can go wrong.

In addition, if they do break, the results are much less catastrophic. That’s because there’s no risk of any toxic gas leaks. This also saves you from having to have your boiler serviced as often, saving money, time, and stress.

Futureproofing

Gas is on the way out.

There’s no getting around this fact. By 2025 you won’t be able to install one in a new build. It’s also likely that by 2035 there’ll be a ban on installing one in existing homes.

Add to that that gas is not renewable. Even if all this Net Zero legislation was thrown out overnight, we’d still be facing the fact that gas supplies are controlled by a few powerful companies, and that they are finite.

That means that gas prices are always shifting. It also means that those gas supplies will inevitably run out.

Gas may be cheaper right now, but you can’t rely on it being so forever. You also can’t rely on being able to access it forever.

So, by swapping to electric boilers sooner rather than later, you’ll ensure your home is prepared for this inevitable shift.

Money Saving Potential

Yes, it’s definitely true that right out of the box an electric boiler is more expensive to run than a gas one.

It’s entirely possible that the price of electric will drop below the price of gas in the coming years. But there’s no way of knowing that for certain.

Even the fact that an electric boiler is 99-100% efficient, and significantly cheaper to buy and install than a gas boiler doesn’t mitigate this concern entirely.

So why is the fact that electric boilers can in fact lower your bills on this list?

Because electric boilers can be combined with renewables, while a gas boiler literally never can.

Firstly, it’s important to remember that current electric power prices are taxed based on the maximum amount of environmental harm they could be causing.

Even if your supplier offers a green tariff, they’re still taxed as if they’re consuming a tonne of fossil fuels.

As the UK continues to pivot towards renewable energy (it’s already at about 40%!) this legislation is likely to shift to encourage more adoption of electric appliances, lowering electricity prices significantly.

Secondly, when your heating is 100% electric, you can generate your own power, whether that’s through personal solar panel arrays and wind turbines, or through renewable cooperative project.

That will help you to offset your energy bills, if not eliminate them entirely.

  1. I am looking for an electric boiler for my central heating in a medium sized 3 bed detached cottage. I have purchased an infrared radiator a with an idea of going to radiators instead of central heating and it works well. Could you give me any idea on the consumption of power for these?

    1. Hi Carole!
While the best fit for your home, and precisely how much power will be consumed on a daily basis, will depend on the nuances of your property (we’d recommend getting in touch to chat with one of our experts about that, as we’ll need more specific information), we currently offer 12kW and 14kW electric boilers.
