Infrared is a great way to heat your space, but every room is different. Here’s our guide to maximising the heat you get out of panel heaters.

Infrared heat is very effective at keeping you warm, but it’s also very directional. It can’t heat what it can’t ‘see’. This means you need to be more mindful of where you place your heaters so you can make sure there’s no cold spots.

There are several factors that can impact how easy heating any given space is, including but not limited to:

  • Insulation levels
  • Size
  • Shape
  • Connected Rooms

For example, if you put a heater in the corner of a room, then the opposite corner of that spot will be the coldest.

Heating patterns (also known as thermal routines or heat maps) are a great way to get an idea of how well heated a space actually is.

Let’s take a look at the biggest factors that can impact the spread of heat in your home.

Wall Mounted Vs Ceiling Mounted

This room is 35.4m³, and is moderately well insulated, so it needs 1063 watts of heat energy to feel warm.

One of our 1200W panels will serve this nicely. However, as this heat map shows, mounting on a wall will leave the opposite side of the room cold.

If you mount the panel on your ceiling instead, you get a heat map like this instead…

Which is much more comfortable!

L Shaped Rooms

This room needs a total wattage of 2400W. Naturally, two 1200W panels seems like the best fit. However, the diagram shows that this will leave a large cold spot.

Instead, we can install a 1200W panel in the most used space of the room, while the remaining wattage can be divided between two 580W panels. This keeps the entire room warm!

Long Rooms

This long room has a similar situation. It also requires 2400W so the initial instinct is to grab two 1200W panels and put them at opposite sides of the room. This leads an uncomfortable strip in the middle of the room.

Adding a 580W panel and making this small adjustment will fix the issue.
