With heating costs so high, you may be thinking about keeping the heating off for as long as possible. Here’s why you may need to reconsider…

If you’re trying to save money, then turning your heating on only when you need it most is a good option. But when temperatures dip into freezing levels, this becomes less viable for two key reasons…

The Danger To You…

If your home hits 15℃, then you’re at risk of lowering your resistance to respiratory diseases. If it gets even lower and hits below 13℃, then you could end up raising your blood pressure. This leaves you at risk of dangerous cardiovascular diseases.

This can be a risk even for fit and healthy people, and for older people, young children and people with underlying health conditions, it can be potentially deadly.

The Danger To Your Home…

Mould and damp isn’t just potentially dangerous to you, it can also cause long term damage to your home. Costing upwards of £300 to repair, in extreme cases damp can cause structural damage to your home.

If that wasn’t enough, the big danger associated with cold homes is frozen pipes. On their own these aren’t necessarily a massive problem, as they can be thawed carefully. But they are at risk of bursting, which is basically just as dangerous as your home flooding by more conventional means.

This is why it’s frequently suggested you drain your water supply if you leave home on a winter holiday.

In practical terms, this will lead to massive water damage. That’s upwards of £1500 per square foot to fix, and that’s without getting into the risk to your precious furnishings and keepsakes.

The Fix…

To counteract freezing temperatures, putting your heating on a low setting all day is one option. You can ensure your home is at the minimum safe temperature to prevent your pipes from freezing.

Personal heaters, particularly our infrared panel heaters can then serve as a top up, so you’ll be personally warm enough to be safe and healthy.

To have more control over this process, we’d recommend investing in smart heating through thermostats or Wi-Fi enabled infrared panels. This lets you easily set up timers so your heating can come on and off throughout the day. That negates the need to have it running constantly.
