How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

Warm air is pulled from outdoors into a refrigerant. This warms up the refrigerant and turns it from a liquid into a gas.
The gas passes through a compressor, where the increased air pressure heats up the gas even more.
The hot gas goes into a heat exchanger, surrounded by air or water. The heat is passed from the gas, and onto the air or water, warming it up.
The now warmed up air or water is circulated through the house to provide either warm air or water.
The refrigerant, now cooled having passed its heat on, condenses back down into a liquid and the process starts again.
